Raag music is an unparalleled art form, distinguished from all other musical traditions globally. Within its limited set of twelve musical notes, it offers boundless possibilities. The fixed notes are intricately connected through intermediate frequencies, known as shrutis, in countless variations. All notes are always moving, so they are living. Picturisation of sound on atmospheric air with the help of our breathing makes a 'Raaga' living.
The Raag Ranjani class focuses on teaching students how to connect and paint these notes into coherent Raag singing. It is highly beneficial for students to also attend the Shuruwaat class, where they master all twelve fundamental musical notes, ensuring complete and comprehensive musical development.
Mastering the Thaats and Raagas:
Indian Raag music is based upon ten essential scales, popularly known as Thaats: Bilaawal, Kalyaan, Khaamaaj, Bhairav, Poorvi, Maarwaa, Kaafi, Aasaavaari, Todi, and Bhairavi. The mostly performed Raagas fall under these ten scales.
In this course, Guru Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty personally teaches approximately one hundred of the most frequently performed Raagas, including a comparative study of those belonging to the same Thaat or group. For instance, within the Kalyaan group, students learn and are taught to compare multiple raagas such as Yaman, Shuddh Kalyaan, Shyam Kalyan, Kedar, Kamod, Chhaayaanat, Haameer, Nand, Bhupaali, and Hamsadhwaani, etc.
Unique Depth of Learning:
This is the only logically explained and analysed online Raag class where students can perfectly learn Raagas with both the Khayal (Vilambit and Drut Compositions) and Dhrupad (Alaap and Compositions) styles. These are taught across two or three prominent taals (rhythmic cycles), including Ektaal, Jhoomra, Jhaanptal, Roopak, Teental, Ikvai, Aada Chautaal in Khayal and Chautaal, Jhaanptaal and Sooltaal in Dhrupad.
All the Alankars (Meend (sliding & gliding), Gamak (fast tempo reverberating oscillations), Soodh, Dynamics and Modulations, Aandolan (slow tempo oscillation), Sparsh (touch note), Lay-kari, Vistaar (elaboration of the Raaga with meaningful part of the lyric), Bol-Baant, Distribution of rhythm in beat and off-beat, Taan (fast movement of different notes with ‘Aa’ vowel), Tihaai, Chhand, Boltaan (taan with lyric of the composition) are taught in this class along with the Advanced reading of lyrics to bring out the feeling of the composition with different Chhand.
